Jebel Marra: A Sanctuary of Peace and Abundance in the Heart of Sudan

By: Samuel Jamal

In the heart of Sudan, a country scarred by war and widespread destruction,
a rare oasis of life and abundance has emerged.
The liberated areas of Jebel Marra, administered by the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid Mohammed al-Nur
have become a sanctuary of safety and dignity for millions of displaced Sudanese—men, women, children and the elderly—escaping violence from every corner of the nation.

Jebel Marra is more than a refuge; it is a natural paradise.
Its mild climate and abundant rainfall—exceptional for Darfur—have endowed it with extraordinary fertility.
The mountain hosts orchards of apples, peaches, pears, grapes, mangoes, papayas, guavas, oranges, lemons and pomegranates,
alongside staple crops such as sorghum, groundnuts, lentils and onions.
Its landscape ranges from cool highlands to warmer valleys, creating microclimates that sustain agriculture and pastoral life rarely seen elsewhere in Sudan.

Across villages such as Golo, Rokero, Nertiti, Deribat, Tarsin, Suni and Tawila,
a civilian authority works hand in hand with disciplined security forces to maintain order and provide essential services.
Local courts and prosecutors operate in harmony with community leaders,
schools and training institutes welcome the children of refugees
and bustling markets display the mountain’s fragrant harvests.

Thanks to the movement’s well-trained forces the region is remarkably free of insecurity.
Life here is not defined by tribal identity or political affiliation but by the simple right to live in peace.
This achievement is a testament to extraordinary self-help: one third civic governance and two thirds selfless sacrifice
in a time when many actors are tearing Sudan apart.

The people of Jebel Marra do not cry out for pity
but they deserve to be discovered and supported.
This is a call to every humanitarian organization and every individual with a living conscience:
there is life here—life that needs assistance, not politics; recognition, not neglect.
In a nation ravaged by war, Jebel Marra stands as proof that Sudan still holds spaces of hope.
