STATEMENT FROM THE SUDAN LIBERATION MOVEMENT REGARDING THE AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION’S ENDORSEMENT OF THE DAILOGUE CONVENED BY THE LEADER OF THE MILITARY COUP

It is with profound regret that the Sudan Liberation Movement received the press release issued by the African Union Commission, welcoming the dialogue committee established by the leader of the military coup, wherein the commission expressly links this initiative to the Quintet Mechanism track. In response, the Sudan Liberation Movement hereby affirms the following: –

First: The statement issued by the African Union Commission and its endorsement of the dialogue initiated by the leader of the Islamist military establishment constitute a grave regression from the African consensus that suspended Sudan’s membership in the wake of Al- Burhan’s coup against the legitimate Government of the Glorious, Peaceful, Civilian –led Popular Revolution on 25 October 2021.
Second: The endorsement of a unilateral dialogue orchestrated by the leader of the Islamist military establishment, who overthrew the revolutionary government to maintain his grip on power – even over a single span of Sudanese territory – constitutes a green light for the partition of Sudan and tacit acceptance of the existing geographical fragmentation.
Third: The association of Al –Burhan’s dialogue initiative with the Quintet Mechanism track, demonstrates that this Mechanism has aligned itself with one of the belligerent parties, and in doing so, has irreparably undermined its own credibility, legitimacy and neutrality.
Fourth: The dialogue initiative promoted by Al-Burhan through his self-appointed committee is designed to bestow a veneer of legitimacy upon his coup and to clear the path for the Islamic Movement’s return to power. This represents a betrayal of the aspirations and struggles of tens of millions of Sudanese men and women – the fallen and living alike- who set ablaze the torch of people’s glorious December Revolution in their unceasing quest for genuine change, civilian democratic transformation, and the decisive defeat of the authoritarian regime and political Islam.
Fifth: Any authentic dialogue aimed at resolving the historical root causes of Sudan’s national crisis, must commence with the cessation and definitive end of the war. Only thereafter should a free dialogue be conducted, with the full Sudanese will and ownership, under the leadership of the components of the glorious December Revolution, not by the coup leader and his entourage. This dialogue must include all Sudanese stakeholders, excluding the National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement, their affiliated facades and any party that declines willingly to participate.
Sixth: The Sudan Liberation Movement asserts its unequivocal endorsement to the position articulated by Sudanese Forces for the Declaration of Principles , concerning this matter, and we urge the African Union and the Quintet Mechanism to side with the will of the Sudanese people – the only source of legitimate authority – and to desist from undermining their right to civilian rule and democratic transformation they strove hard for decades to attain , and to abandon any effort to legitimize the coup orchestrated by the leader of the Islamist military establishment or to compensate those who ignited the war.
