SUDAN LIBERATION MOVEMENT MEETS WITH THE UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY – GENERAL’S PERSONAL ENVOY FOR SUDAN

As part of Sudan Liberation Movement’s unceasing domestic, regional and international efforts to halt and definitively end the ongoing war in Sudan, the Movement met on Friday, 28 August 2026, in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, with Mr. Pekka Haavisto, the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary – General for Sudan.
The meeting addressed a range of pressing Sudanese issues, encompassing the humanitarian situation, the various initiatives put forward to resolve the national crisis, and the practical modalities for achieving cessation and definitive end to the war.
The Movement’s delegation provided the UN Envoy with a comprehensive exposition of the SLM’s vision for resolving the Sudan’s longstanding crisis and addressing its historical root causes, as well as its approach to halting and ending the war. This vision is fully aligned with that of the Forces of the Sudanese Declaration of Principles and is consistent with the outcomes of joint position paper of the anti- war forces, which submitted to the Quintet in Addis Ababa on 23 August 2026.
The delegation also highlighted the tragic humanitarian conditions endured by the Sudanese civilians amid the ongoing conflict, including critical shortage of food, medicine, and shelter. They further noted the insufficiency of international relief and humanitarian assistance efforts, and urgently called for immediate international mobilization to avert an impending famine and humanitarian catastrophe, particularly in light of the prevailing rainfall deficit this year.
Concerning the proposed initiatives, the Movement’s delegation reiterated its endorsement of the Quad international initiative, which established a sound basis for addressing the situation in Sudan. However, they expressed certain observations and reservations regarding the performance of the Quintet. Accordingly, the Forces of the Sudanese Declaration of Principles formally communicated these observations and concerns and proposed amendments to the international Quintet.

The Movement’s delegation categorically rejected the dialogue initiative proposed by Al- Burhan, deeming it a mere exercise in seeking legitimacy for his coup. The delegation drew a parallel between Al- Burhan’s dialogue and the “leap dialogue” launched by the deposed president Omer Al- Bashir in January 2014. Asserting that such maneuvers would not resolve the Sudanese crisis. They emphasized that, a genuine and comprehensive dialogue, must be conducted strictly after the cessation and definitive end of the war, excluding the National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement and their affiliated facades, as well as any party that willingly refuse to participate.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the movement’s delegation extended a special invitation to the Personal Envoy to visit Darfur and the liberated territories under the Movement’s sovereignty. They also requested that the distinguished Envoy engage extensively with all Sudanese constituencies – across cities and rural areas, and in IDPs and refugee camps – in order to listen directly to their perspective on resolving the crisis, rather than limiting his consultations to political and civil actors alone.

Abdellatif Abdelrahman Abaker, (also known as Tibo), member of the Supreme Leadership Council;
Nimeiri Issa Musa, (also known as Jara), in charge of humanitarian and organizations affairs.
