Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurated for a new term

Addis Ababa:

The inauguration ceremony of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for a new five-year term was held on Monday at a time when his government faces a series of challenges, including the months-long conflict in the Tigray region (North).

Ahmed, who won a landslide victory in the June elections, was sworn in by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Meza Ashinavi, after the Speaker and Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives did so.

Abiy said during his swearing in, “I, Abiy Ahmed Ali, today in the House of People’s Representatives agree to appoint me as prime minister, and I pledge to assume the responsibility that the people have placed upon me with responsibility and with faith in the constitution.”

The Abyei Prosperity Party won a landslide victory in the June elections, which federal officials saw as a reflection of the democratic reforms it has launched since taking power in 2018.

But until it is time for voters to cast their ballots, tens of thousands have been killed in the conflict in Tigray province, where hundreds of thousands are facing famine-like conditions, according to the United Nations, tarnishing the reputation of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister.
