The Forgotten and Starved to Death Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Darfur camps

By: Adam Rojal

Unbearable ten months have passed since the tragic war of Sudan broke out, and the displaced people of Darfur in their quarantined IDPs camps are caught between the rock of death from hunger, traumatic psychological illnesses and diseases and the hard place of death by bullets and bombardment as the belligerent parties to the ongoing war barbarically target them, thus committing widespread and unfathomable human rights violations against them through arbitrary arrests, torture, physical liquidation and the cutting off of the communication networks and the Internet for more than eight months, which is also considered a grave war crime. A few live examples of these violations are, on 12ed of February 2024, a minor named Arafat Omer Kosolo, 15 years old, resident of Sanqada IDP camp of Kass city of South Darfur was tortured to death two days after his arrest by the Rapid Support Forces (RSFs) intelligence personnel, also on 15th of February 2024, an IDP sheikh Abdul Raziq Yusuf Suleiman, resident of Al Hamidiyya IDP camp in Zalingei was detained, while he was en route to the premises of the humanitarian aid commission, and his whereabouts remained unknown until now.

However; in this critical juncture that our country is going through and we live in catastrophic and unprecedented humanitarian conditions imposed on us by both parties to the conflict as tens of children, pregnant women and aged IDPs are dying daily due to cute malnutrition, lack of food, medicine and drinking water, therefore; the disastrous humanitarian situation requires reconsideration and in- depth analysis, putting into account the serious human rights violations perpetrated against the defenseless civilians by both parties, furthermore ; the international community must use its moral authority and mount more pressure on the parties to the conflict and not leave millions of the victims in this situation, also implementation of all the UN. Security Council resolutions issued against the government of Sudan are vital, along with rapid intervention to put an end to the ongoing war which destroyed each and every thing, including the infrastructure, and the medical and service rendering institutions.

21st of February 2024.
